Chipo Sana
Ruth First Scholar (2016-17)
Chipo Sana is from Zimbabwe.
She graduated from Bindura University of Science Education in 2013 with a BSc in Social Work, and won the National Association of Social Workers Prize for the Best Student in the Programme. She has worked as an International Citizen Services Volunteer for Progressio, an international development charity, providing support to children living in the streets, abused children, children in institutions, elderly people and poor women. In 2015-16 she worked as a Detention Monitoring Assistant for CATCH (Care at the Core of Humanity) Zimbabwe, assisting children in conflict with the law.
At Durham, Chipo took an MA in International Social Work and Community Development. She was a member of St Chad’s College, which supports the Scholarship by providing subsidized accommodation for all Ruth First Scholars.
When she returns to Zimbabwe, Chipo plans to continue her work with children and other people in need, and hopes to become a lecturer so that she can train, mentor and inspire future social workers. In the meantime, she has taken up a post as a social worker in the UK, working for Norfolk County Council.
