Ruth First Prize

Ruth First Prize for the Best Postgraduate Dissertation in Sociology
In 2024 the Department of Sociology at Durham University, in which Ruth First worked in the 1970s, established an annual prize in her honour. The prize is awarded to the student obtaining the highest mark for a dissertation in one of the department’s taught postgraduate programmes (MSc in Sociology, MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice, and MA in Social Research Methods). Honouring Ruth’s legacy, the prize celebrates excellence in research and recognises the potential to make a difference in the world.
